The artist is seen reflected in a mirror. As biographer Christine France notes in her interview in in Margaret Olley: A Generous Life, Olley followed her own vision and advised young artists to do the same. It is good to hear what the artist has to say about their work as it gives us a unique in site into their practice and intentions.

Over the last five years the National Portrait Gallery has developed a collection of portrait photographs that reflects both the strength and diversity of Australian achievement as well as the talents of our photographers. Dobell’s portrait of Olley, dressed in a gown fashioned from surplus wartime parachute silk, won the 1948 Archibald Prize. In 1990, she endowed the Margaret Hannah Olley Art Trust, which has funded acquisitions by many Australian institutions including the National Portrait Gallery.
Margaret Olley was one of only a few Australian women to be able to make a career as an artist in the mid 20th Century.

She and Morley were introduced to each other by Barry Humphries, and became close friends. Remaining one of Sydney’s most recognisable arts identities, Olley was again the subject of an Archibald Prize-winning portrait, this time by Ben Quilty, in 2011. Collection: National Portrait Gallery 'A Generous Life’ examines the legacy and influence of much-loved Australian artist, Margaret Olley (1923–2011) who spent a formative part of her career in Brisbane. She held her first solo exhibition at Sydney’s Macquarie Galleries, from which the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the National Gallery of Victoria both purchased works.
