If you are based in Amsterdam you can catch an 18 minute train from Amsterdam Centraal to Zaandijk Zaanse Schans for only €3.10 each way! We are however not keen to book online in advance. The clog factory looks amazing!!! Entrance is free (pay for parking) but to get inside the windmills, need to pay (not a lot!) Didn’t get to climb up the windmills but I took soooo many photos. This is partly what I enjoyed the most, as the area is very picturesque and some of the houses are actually residences. Aside from travel and/or parking costs, it is possible to visit Zaanse Schans, have a great time and not spend a thing! I spent 2 months in Holland this past year but didn’t make it here. After living in Tasmania and Western Australia I spent a year in London where this blog began. Zaanse Schans is a neighbourhood in the Dutch town of Zaandam, very close to Amsterdam. Between 1961 and 1974 a number of historic buildings were re-located here and the area is now a major tourist site featuring preserved … And it is full with wooden windmills, barns, houses and museums.
You will be sorely tempted to try some of the mouth-watering products available here, I especially recommend the Thanks Sarah! Zaanse Schans Windmills and Volendam Small-Group Tour from Amsterdam . There are seats along the way, and sitting here and looking at the rest of the pretty town of Zaandam across the river is also very nice.The views from some of those windmills were very pretty but I have to admit to being more into the chocolate samples than the cheese ones! I would suggest bringing food and drink with you, there are lots of nice spots where you can sit and have a picnic while enjoying the scenery and atmosphere and of course, buying food at a supermarket beforehand is very economical.
