SoFitzroy mountain is the famous hike from El Chalten but there are many others. Best of all, both regions are easily combined. Although, the stunning Mount Fitz Roy in Argentina comes a close second. While you can spot the elusive puma and cute guanacos in Chile, you’ll have the chance to see Magellanic penguins, fur seals and fascinating birds like the austral parakeet in Ushuaia.

Ideally you need about a month and then maybe you can also add-on Ushuaia. Ushuaia is (apparently) the most southern city in the world and is at the bottom of Patagonia. There’s nothing better than coming home to world-class Argentine beef or the famous El Calafate lamb, washed down with a fine Malbec wine after a day of adventure in Patagonia. It is not the most southerly state but if you look at a map it is definitely in the south of the country and in the South of the world. The Argentine Patagonia is divided into 5 provinces (Rio Negro, Chubut, Tierra-del-Fuego, Neuquen, and Santa Cruz). Patagonia is in both the countries of Argentina and Chile. This was before the Andes mountains existed and when the high pressure simply turned to rain and the whole region was a rainforest.

Remember this…. It is the The wind is strong here due to the high pressure and very cold current from the Antarctica that gets pushed up the Pacific coast alongside Chile and then when it hits land the huge Andes mountain range acts as a massive natural barrier between the two countries and the result is that it rains more on the Chilean side and is much drier on the Argentinian side which has a really wind-swept appearance and lots of very flat land known as The Steep.
