Winged Foot is consistently ranked as one of the greatest golf courses in America. Much of this is due to the championship set up of narrow fairways and deep rough with lightening fast greens. The strength of the course comes with the utra-demanding putting surfaces. Each is a par-4 hole and none can be taken lightly when playing for a championship or just a friendly wager. Being above the hole is not recommended.

Winged Foot has hosted several major tournaments in its history along with a few US Opens. In the '74 US Open Jack Nicklaus hit the 1st green in regulation -- having a birdie putt from 25-feet.

There is a bit of ground movement but no one would call it remotely hilly.
In their 1923 brochure announcing the opening of both courses (East and West), the golf committee warned the golfer about the first two holes on the East course. Perched almost volcano greens abound and the best par 5 on the Winged Foot property is number 4 - the fairway sadly scraped bare for the 2006 US Open hospitality tents.

The par-4 15th is superb mid-length hole sliding downhill and then climbing to a magnificent green diagonally angled from lower left to back right. A pity. Better than "The best Course" in perhaps all but a dozen US states, it is truly a great course that stands on its own merit. Tillinghast would be happy.” The West doesn't need to be "helped" given the inherent design characteristics.The long par-4 8th at 475 yards is another fabulous hole. The little brother to the West gets far too little attention and clearly deserves its own special mention. A 36 hole day at Winged Foot is a real treat!I'll admit that I really liked the East Course but i don't have it anywhere near my world top 100. His next putt was 28 feet coming back to the hole. Widening the fairways in the range of 30-35 yards would add more versatility providing for more playable angles into the greens. Tillinghast and it’s another of his revered creations.. The short par-4 6th is often undervalued. We are most excited about the U.S. Open to be played at Winged Foot in 2020. Some never returned to the course.It is said that WF is the best Golf Club in USA and I can closely agree if we put Oakmont and Merion in the same level, taking into account Cypress Point is a different thing. The most recent US Open came in 2006 when several key players lost an opportunity to win the event -- the most notable being Phil Mickelson surrendering a one shot lead with a concluding double-bogey on the 18th hole.



Missing a tad either right or left results in demanding recoveries. What many may not know is that Fred Corcoran -- the man responsible for the creation of what would become the modern PGA Tour -- had a house immediately adjacent to the green and when in residence would be quick to invite players to his home for a mid-round celebration.

If you play those greens every day, you will get your short game very sharp. I have always preferred The East, and my love continued yesterday. A couple weeks ago during an amazing golf tour I had the distinct honor of playing Winged Foot. Two additional putts had the Golden Bear flummoxed as he left the green. This 194-yard hole was nicknamed “Trouble” by Tillinghast because there’s an element of luck as well as plenty of skill required to hit the raised green with a long iron.You're in Maui, how does it get any better. Then off to a nice Driving Range where every ball is a ProV1 with the Winged Foot logo, it might not be noticeable for people who play it often but for visitors like me it is a nice detail.

Tillinghast marvelously created a routing for both courses that never fails to keep one on your toes. The East course only has fifty-three traps, so this is golf of the strategic vs. the penal variety that you may find at a course like Oakmont. Winged Foot’s two courses, the West and the East, have hosted 11 U.S.

The locals will tell you that the members play the East and the guests play the West. 6th is short 320 yards but v v tricky approach to a very narrow entrance. Putting green gives you just a hint of what you are going to face, as it does not have the slopes of the course greens but yes the speed. There are internal contours as well to contend with too.
The tee shot must be faded on this dog-leg right. In the '59 Open winner Billy Casper wisely layed-up in front and was able to make par with a chip and putt strategy. What a special place enriched in golf history.

Other national championships followed but it was the famed '74 US Open -- dubbed, "The Massacre at Winged Foot," that forever etched in stone the reputation of the West Course.

Two-course major: There are 36 championship-level holes at Winged Foot in the form of both an East Course and a West Course. While the property is relatively flat, the green-sites are pushed up with treacherous contours.

In order to bolster its reputation the club decided to extend the par-5 12th to 640 yards. It’s a monumental experience and a challenging course and deserves to be higher up in the rankings.

!A special paragraph to 320yds par 4 6th, very very challenging, went for the green, narrow miss and my 2nd shot was impossible, only from 50 yds.

The final hole -- aptly named "Revelations" -- is one of the strongest concluding holes in American golf.
